Nursing Home Abuse

With Americans living longer, the number of people living in a nursing home grows ever year. But, that does not mean that the care that one receives or expects to receive should suffer.
The most common signs of nursing home abuse or neglect are: bruises, open wounds, bedsores, sudden weight loss, fleas, lice, fecal/urine odors and general poor hygiene. Though psychological harm and intentional infliction of emotional distress are also serious injuries that are very common as well.
There are safeguards for the elderly. The state of Florida has enacted rigorous laws as well as the Federal government along with Medicaid and Medicare. Florida has passed the Nursing Home Residents’ Bill of Rights. This bill gives residents in part a right to privacy, adequate health care and freedom from corporal abuse. Further, Florida state laws allow for civil lawsuits against a facility that has been found guilty of abuse of its residents.
